Nguyễn Đình Chiểu (1822-1888), one of the greatest patriots in the history of Vietnam and recognized as a World Cultural Celebrity by UNESCO in 2021, made an indelible contribution to the development of Vietnamese thought and culture due to his patriotic sentiments and steadfastness against foreign invaders. The current paper investigates the philosophical and cultural aspects of Nguyễn Đình Chiểu’s patriotism on the basis of the theoretical framework of dialectical materialism and historical materialism. Thus, the current study discusses such main aspects of Nguyễn Đình Chiểu’s patriotic thought as: the development of moral righteousness and humanity, the role and power of people, profound sympathy towards the common folk, and staunch resistance against foreign invaders in order to defend the country. In view of Vietnam’s high level of integration into the world community and ongoing complex processes of globalization, the patriotism of Nguyễn Đình Chiểu is relevant and important both theoretically and practically, contributing to the development of national identity and patriotism of young people.
