Abstract
The research topic entitled “Climate Adaptation Methods and Their Role in Sustaining Heritage Houses in Mosul” examines heritage houses by addressing their definition and their linguistic, archaeological, and architectural terminology, and then explores their heritage and architectural importance in the city of Mosul. It also examines methods for preserving and protecting these houses from climatic and weather conditions, as well as methods of maintenance and restoration intended to ensure their sustainability for a longer period. This is achieved by identifying the climate-adaptation methods that affect heritage houses in the city of Mosul. Sustainability, in its simplest sense, refers to practical measures aimed at adapting to the negative effects of climate change, such as water scarcity, rising temperatures, and floods. The research therefore considers the most prominent methods that should be followed to preserve heritage buildings from deterioration, erosion, and destruction resulting from the passage of time, variations in temperature, humidity, cold, and other accompanying environmental factors. Humidity, rainfall, and winds directly affect many of the architectural elements of heritage houses in the city of Mosul. This situation necessitates identifying preventive and sustainable methods for these heritage buildings, protecting and maintaining them, and continuing to restore and prepare them so that they remain suitable for living and residence. Such work should adopt raw materials that are capable of resisting climatic factors throughout the seasons of the year and under varying weather conditions, thereby helping to sustain the buildings and preserve their architectural and cultural value for future generations.
